FZFW:Zoda (Anime)
- This article is about the Anime Unverse Zoda. For the Main Universe character with the same name, see Zoda.
Template:Character Zoda (Full Name: Zodak Strawberry) is the pilot of the Death Anchor, and is Ryu Suzaku’s longtime nemesis from 150 years prior to 2201. He is also a member of Dark Million.
Appearance
Zoda has had 3 different major appearances throughout the series.
His original human is usually depicted in flashback sequences for the year 2051. He has light skin, black hair, and wears a pinstripe grey suit with a matching cap. Even in his human form, Zoda possessed abnormally large, bestial canine teeth.
Zoda's form after his coldsleep revival depicts him as a tall purple humanoid with various cybernetic enhancements, including a yellow tube attached from his chest to the top of his head. He wears black armor with a red part underneath, black belt with a skull belt buckle, green pants with a holster attached, and black boots.
By Lap 26, Zoda received a more drastic change in appearance after gaining powers from his Reactor Might, becoming bigger and more muscular. Rechristening himself as Hyper Zoda, he had disregarded his top armor, and had two yellow tubes attached to him along with 4 red circular objects on his chest. Following Black Shadow's defeat, Hyper Zoda was returned to his original post-revival form.
Personality
Zoda is best described as cruel, violent, maniacal and utter unhinged. Having no moral compas or compassion, he is constantly out to destroy anything in his sights for no reason beyond causing suffering to others. These violent tendencies also extend to those whom work alongside him, as Zoda considers anyone and anything expendable to get what he wants.
Throughout the anime, Zoda is often the subject of ridicule by Black Shadow or Miss Killer, but very much has his serious and even powerful moments. He is very spiteful and manipulative, resorting to constantly wanting to overthrow Black Shadow.
He also has an affinity for sweets, further emphasized after he became Hyper Zoda.
History
F-Zero Farukon Densetsu (Anime)
Pre-2201
Zodak Strawberry, the man who would become Zoda, was originally created by Black Shadow in a bio lab within a military base on the planet Lightning. He was then sent to the past to eliminate Ryu Suzaku, the alleged Savior of the Universe who would be an obstacle in Black Shadow's desire to send the galaxy into darkness. To ensure his plan would progress smoothly, Zoda was sent back into the past with no memory of his origins, believing he was simply a normal human being.
Allegedly, according to Bart Lemming, at some point in Zoda's life, he had worked in a sweets factory, but was fired after consuming many cakes on the job. He then turned to a life of crime. As the self proclaimed "King of New York," Zoda was a renowned criminal. He was eventually arrested but had escaped from prison, and all New York police units were to respond. An officer named Ryu Suzaku was on the pursuit, while hoping he’d make it in time to meet with his girlfriend Misaki Haruka who he was going to propose to. Zoda would be the one to ensure it wouldn’t happen, as he shot the joints of the door from the car he stole, and Ryu watched helplessly as it was flung through his windshield, fatally injuring him.
2196
145 years later (2196), Zoda was awoken from cryosleep at Alcatrand, a facility for criminals in coldsleep, broken into by Dark Million.
At some point after being awakened, within the same year, Zoda was part of a Dark Million smuggling operation on the planet Heru. There, he spotted Roy Hughes with Captain Falcon, and jumped down from a higher level of the area. Zoda, already knowing that Roy had been a spy for a long while, and walked toward the duo with a gun. Roy then lunged for Zoda, with the former telling Captain Falcon to escape and realizing that Falcon had been Andy Summer. Zoda then shot Roy and stood up to threaten Falcon. However, Roy set off a detonator, allowing Falcon to escape.
2201
He would meet his old nemesis, Ryu, in the year 2201. Though Zoda appeared on a news broadcast during Lap 1, it was not until Lap 3 that Ryu and Zoda would meet face to face.
2202
It was later revealed in Lap 45 - Zoda that Black Shadow created Zoda in the present day and sent him back in time to defeat Ryu, perhaps to ensure that Captain Falcon or any incarnation of good would have no tiebreaker in this long battle.
During Lap 26, Zoda, thanks to the Reactor Might infused in his stomach, would receive another form called 'Hyper Zoda.' This form would be shown properly in Lap 32. He often used the Reactor Might to his advantage, overwhelming Miss Killer by making her hidden past memories resurface, and even upgrading his machine to the Hyper Death Anchor. Zoda also used its power to control the environment, when the Hyper Death Anchor became a part of a lava dragon that ate Black Shadow and his machine on Fire Field. Additionally, Zoda could also utilize his own version of Boost Fire, called Death Fire.
Ultimately thrown into Black Shadow's Dark Matter Reactor during Lap 51, it is through Zoda regaining consciousness and encouraging Ryu to fight for Haruka against Black Shadow, that Ryu regains his strength and courage. After the Dark Matter Reactor explodes and Falcon delivers a Falcon Punch that kills Black Shadow and himself, Zoda is not seen for a while.
2207
It isn't until the epilogue of Lap 51, during an F-Zero Grand Prix in the year 2207, that Zoda makes a last minute entry appearance in his normal skinnier form, much to the dismay of The Skull and Baba.

In the F-Zero GP Legend GBA game, Zoda is a playable character with his machine, the Death Anchor. He is also featured as a Story Mode character.
F-Zero GP Legend Story Mode
Due to the game being released only 8 episodes into the anime's original JP airtime, and the game being loosely based on the anime, the Story Mode is not canon.

Zoda (English Translation): His real name is Zodak Strawberry. Originally a violent criminal back in the year 2051, he was later resurrected by Black Shadow's hands in 2201. The cable coming out of his head controls adrenaline and dopamine levels in his body, granting him superhuman capabilities. |
Note: Zoda was resurrected in the year 2196, not 2201. This conflicts with the anime which not only states he was revived 5 years before 2201, but he was also seen during the 2196 Heru incident. Additionally, ゾーダックストロベリー translates to "Zodak Strawberry" although he is mostly referred to as Zoda during the anime, even in the past. However, in Bart's F-Zero Classroom segment for Lap 32, and during the next episode preview during Lap 48, the full name is audibly heard.

Hyper Zoda (English Translation): With the power of his Reactor Might embedded in his body, he absorbs the power of the Blood Falcon army to power himself up. Along with this increased power, Zoda's evil intent also increases, as well as his craving for sweets. |
