History
F-Zero Farukon Densetsu (Anime)
Pre-2201
Roy Hughes was a spy for the Galaxy Police and was the best friend of Andy Summer. At some point, Roy would have a son named Clank Hughes, presumably within the year 2191. (Clank is 11 in the year 2202, 2202 minus 11 equals 2191.)
2196
5 years prior to 2201, on the planet Heru, a transport ship exploded. Upon further investigation by the Galaxy Police, it was revealed to be a Dark Million smuggling operation with Black Shadow overseeing it. Andy Summer, as Captain Falcon, was rumored to have been responsible for the explosion. The Galaxy Police arrived on the scene and the only survivor’s final words was that there was "a blue machine."
The truth about the Heru transport ship explosion is that Roy Hughes, encountered Falcon in a Dark Million transport ship. Roy, who was working undercover, was questioned by Falcon. The brief encounter gave Zoda time to come across the two and figure out that Roy was a spy. As Roy engaged in a struggle with Zoda, he was shot managed tell Falcon, who he had recognized as Andy Summer, to escape while setting off a bomb. Only Roy’s brain remained intact since then.
2202
Six years later, in the year 2202, Black Shadow reached out to Dr. Stewart to revive Roy. After retrieving the doctor from Alcatrand, Dr. Stewart worked in one of Dark Million's labs, and revived Roy as a cyborg.. After retrieving Dr. Stewart from Alcatrand, the doctor was or As a newly revived cyborg with no memories of the past, the fact about him being Clank's father wouldn’t be known to Clank until Lap 34. As Mighty Gazelle, Roy was manipulated by Dark Million in his new cyborg body, unbeknownst to Dr. Stewart, who was the the one who revived Roy.
After some time, Gazelle would eventually break free of the control during Lap 34, and risked his life to shield Clank from a blast from Zoda’s bomb. Knowing he could at least assure his son that his father was there for him, Gazelle would then collapse from overexertion. Clank would run to his father's side, tearfully realizing who the man behind the cyborg was. Dr. Stewart swore to fix him, and stayed true to his word.
2207
By the end of the anime during the epilogue of Lap 51, Roy is seen, no longer in his cyborg body, but seemingly his old human body, watching his now 16-year-old son participate in an F-Zero Grand Prix in the year 2207.
