History

Pre-2201

Two years before 2201 (three before 2202),[1] Jack Levin was once a member of a famous band.[1] But sometime prior to the band, he was a notorious street criminal by the name of "The Shinigami" and sometimes known as the Highway Devil, responsible for the defeat of several rival gangs in the past.[2] After being chased by then Galaxy Police officer Jody Summer,[2] she had gone to check on his condition after he fell off his hoverbike.[2] As it exploded behind them,[2] she asked if he was alright.[2] It was through Jody’s actions that Jack decided to clean up his own act and do something else with his life,[2] and thus he joined the Mobile Task Forc.[1]

2201

By the year 2201, Jack had become a popular F-Zero pilot and a member of the Mobile Task Force. When Ryu Suzaku was revived in the same year, he and Jack quickly became friendly rivals both on and off the track over the course of time.

Though Jack is a skilled pilot, his status of being popular with women often led him into trouble. He was tricked by a woman named "Lisa,"[3] who was later revealed to be Samurai Goroh’s wife,[3] the space pirate known as Lisa Brilliant.[3] Jack’s Astro Robin was stolen by her and used for the majority of a race with a new paint job, until she was caught between the Golden Fox and the temporary two-seated Dragon Bird.[3]

2202

In the year 2202, Jack had continued to be part of the Mobile Task Force and race as an F-Zero pilot. However, he was undercover during the Ladies Race in Lap 21, along with Ryu, Mr. EAD, Octoman, Bio Rex, and Zoda.

In Lap 32, there was a fake Jack within Dark Space, created by Zoda in order to taunt Ryu. Ryu could not bring himself to shoot the illusion, disappointing Zoda as the illusion faded. The real Jack, however, was there to awaken Ryu after the Dragon Bird pilot escaped from Dark Space.

During Lap 37, as Michael Chain attempted to revive "The Shinigami," Jack confronted the Bloody Chain leader and temporarily took on the role again to face off with Michael. The two ended up in somewhat of a draw, hanging off the ledge of a bridge until the Galaxy Police approached. As Jack had quit the Mobile Task Force to properly challenge Michael, a meeting with the Galaxy Police Chief had resulted in Jack being able to rejoin, as the Chief had counted the confrontation with Michael as part of a valid investigation.

He was also present during the final battle against Dark Million in the year 2202 during Lap 51.[4]

2207

Jack would later be seen in the new 2207 F-Zero Grand Prix, participating with his fellow Mobile Task Force members; Jody Summer, Lucy Liberty, an older Clank Hughes, as well as Ryu who became the new Captain Falcon.[4]

Additionally, Jack also now has a magenta-colored star on his left cheek, similar to the thunderbolt face paint markings he once had during his time as The Shinigami, and also similar to the face paint markings he had when he was part of a band.

F-Zero GP Legend (GBA game)

PAL: The girls’ favorite pilot. Rick’s rival as well as his friend. Often gets told off by Jody!

In the F-Zero GP Legend GBA game, Jack is a playable character with his machine, the Astro Robin. He is also featured as a Story Mode character.

F-Zero GP Legend Story Mode

Due to the game being released only 8 episodes into the anime's original JP airtime, and the game being loosely based on the anime, the Story Mode is not canon.

F-Zero Climax

F-Zero Climax Pilot Profile

元々はストリートミュージシャンか、暴走族。 ジョディにその歌の才能・・・ではなくドライビングテクニックを買われ、入隊を決意する。 女好きだが、本当はジョディのことをおもっている?

Jack Levin (DeepL Translation): A member of the Mobile Task Force, and Ryu's rival. He used to be a street musician and a biker. Jody then took interest in Jack, not for his singing talent, but for his driving technique. Jack then joined the Task Force. He is a ladies man, but does he really have feelings for Jody?

Note: F-Zero Climax referring to Jack as a street musician seems to contradict with the anime saying that he was part of a famous band, even having a music video and an album (Cheery Blue Machine).

Trivia

  • Although the main universe counterpart of Jack is famous for being a pop idol and F-Zero racer, the anime version is recognized as only having briefly been in a famous band, later finding his biggest success as a member of the Mobile Task Force and as an F-Zero racer. The anime version of Jack also does not seem to continue his music career.
  • Lap 40 seems to further imply that Jack may have been the Shinigami before being a member of a band, due to the lines in the year 2202 being "That's me 3 years ago. I wanted to be a pop star instead of a gang member. Jody invited me to join the Mobile Task Force though."[1]
  • Jack and Ryu provide voice overs for the "Next Episode" previews in the anime. At some point, Jack refers to himself as the "F-Zero Princess Levinelle."
  • Jack Levin is voiced by Kazuki Yao, who may be notable for having voiced Judau Ashta, the protagonist of ZZ Gundam.
